Lately....

Well....
I've been online a lot looking at visa stuff for getting my man over to my country. After I got home last time, I consulted a lawyer and he made it seem pretty simple, but he wanted $3600, and that is something I don't have right now. Husband is still getting his paperwork together, so we haven't been too concerned about it, but once I leave here, I wont be able to afford to come back for a long while. I think I can do this without a lawyer, thanks to the plethora of information on the internet (Oh how my life would suck without Google!), but first I need to get home and get a job and an address, so I think it might be a while before I see my sweet man again. Makes me sad.
My time is winding down. Two weeks until I leave India and about a week and a half until we leave this village and go to Mumbai and Goa. So ready to see something new, and so ready to go home, back to yoga, back to work.
I have been sick a lot lately. Upset stomach, diarrhea, and sinus issues which have been giving me headaches. I want to do Bikram for 30 days in a row just to get out the toxins I've built up here!
I wrote down a recipe for a Punjabi dish that my sister-in-law makes. It's called kadhi and it is kind of like a spicy soup with pakoras in it that I put over rice. I like it a lot and it looks pretty easy to make so maybe when I am visiting you, Emily, we can put it in action! Mind you, the recipe is more like a little of this, a pinch of that, a bit of this, some of that, so we shall have to go by looks and taste. :)

So, forgive me for not posting. I am burnt out.
And if anyone has any tips on visas and immigration stuff or knows of any web sites I could gather more info, it would be appreciated.
Hope you all are enjoying life, love, good coffee, and being a productive member of society. Aloha!

All 3 of those websites were frequented by my hubby when we were filling out his papers. Not only do they have tons of information, they also have forums where you can post questions and get responses from people who have gone through it already.
Trackit was nice too, in that you can make a profile with your paper information (once it has been sent) and they will give you a tentative timeline of sorts (based on the times given by other users) for when you should be granted your GC, EAD or Visa, ect.

We also made one of those "free" calls to an immi layer here in Boston before we started applying. He basically told us that if you do not have any red flags then you shouldn't have any issue filing on your own. Red flag= arrests, previous marriage, short period of time between meeting and marriage (hey, ours was only 6 months and we had no issue) ect.

My hubby did purchase a pre-made package of immi papers for filing for his papers. I don't know off the top of my head where he got it from though, but will ask if you want. While most of your the papers you need are provided on government immi page, they don't always make it easy to understand. This packet he purchased had it all neatly together in pdf files with a checklist and a timeline of when (and where) you should send the papers.

A lawyer will just make sure you cross your T's and dot you i's… if you can handle the stress, save your money and do it yourself. Have a good friend to double check your work and to bounce questions off of.

Enjoy your last few weeks there! Will you be keeping up with this blog after? Hope so!

  2. What kind of visa is he trying to get? Are you looking into getting a green card? Whatever it is, $3600 sounds like waaaay too much. I was quoted $1200 from a lawyer for getting a green card, but I ended up doing everything on my own. It takes time and was a bit confusing, but it is totally possible to do it without a lawyer! It's been a few years since I did all that, but if you have any questions I could probably help out.

  4. Thanks ladies. Andrea, I got your first one in my email, so I will definitely check those websites. I was nervous about doing it wrong when I was first confronted with this whole thing, but after 5 months of searching for info, I think I can handle it. :)
